About the event
The Rhapsody Band debuts this summer with shows in Fredericton North and South. The group is fronted by the widely known vocalist and pianist Patrick Flanagan, and backed by guitarist Andrew Somerville, bassist Dave Cunningham, and Jean-Marc Leger on percussion. The band performs songs of love, longing, and lament, taking audiences on musical journeys of pleasure and delight — songs ranging from leisurely ballads to swing jazz, to blues, and to standard classics that exist today only in film and on vinyl.
As frontman, Patrick Flanagan comes from a long history of music in New Brunswick as a vocalist and keyboardist, beginning in Fredericton and Montreal with the well-known and much-loved Naked Lunch in 1960s and 70s, to the Saint John-based Southside Shuffle in the 80’s and beyond, including many personal local appearances over the history of the Harvest Jazz and Blues Festival and Christmas@thePlayhouse. In the past decade, he has gradually moved towards performing jazz standards, including a stint with his five-piece combo formed with bassist Don Gorman, and appearances with the Qatar Philharmonic Orchestra choir for several seasons.
A native of Montreal, bassist Dave Cunningham has a long history of live music in the region, most notably twenty years with the Downtown Blues Band and fifteen years with The Thomists big band. He adds a significant breadth of musical genres and performance skill to The Rhapsody Band’s stage.
Guitarist Andrew Somerville brings us the best of Carleton County’s musical traditions, much of it with bluegrass flavours. His contributions to The Rhapsody Band are built on his many years playing guitar, banjo, mandolin, piano and other instruments, five years as a session player at a recording studio in Centreville, seven years of Harvest Festival shows with Eric LeBlanc and Friends, several years backing the renowned Frank Davis, and several years Barber Shopping!
Percussionist Jean-Marc Leger’s music journey began at age 14 with his first gigs in his hometown of Montreal. He later studied percussion there at Vincent D’Indy School of Music. He has done studio work for numerous artists, and produced two CDs for his own jazz group, one of which receiving an ECMA nomination.
